Ebb—Evaluate. Breathe. Begin.

Created for my University of Georgia New Media Capstone class, Ebb is an Apple Watch and iPhone app that strives to suppress the feelings of anxiety millions of Americans face every day.

Ebb uses the Apple Watch's heart rate sensor to check for the user's heart rate to spike under the right conditions—an indicator of anxiety—and will send the user a notification to perform anxiety-reducing exercises.

  • Constantly monitors the user's heart rate to determine when they become stressed
  • Sends a gentle notification when the user is feeling anxious
  • Walks the user through six exercises—including yoga, muscle relaxation and breathing exercises—proven to relieve stress
  • Includes a built-in heart rate monitor the user can use to get immediate notifications of a heart rate spike
  • Calculates the user's average, minimum and maximum heart rates for a time period the user chooses

Changing Shion's life

Okay, a bit of storytelling: After completing Ebb, I was approached by Jim Moore, a professor at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, who was looking for an app that could measure someone's heart rate. He was working with a professor in Japan, Takahiro Ito, who worked with physically disabled students.

Takahiro had discovered that the best way to determine if one of his physically disabled students was focusing was by measuring their heart rate—if their heart rate went up, they weren’t focusing; if their heart rate went down, they were focusing. However, the technology he had to video record students while also monitoring their heart rate was lackluster.

I created an Apple Watch and iPad app to streamline his experience. The Apple Watch would monitor the student’s heart rate while the iPad would display his or her heart rate and graph it in real-time while also video recording the student.

The app was so helpful, Takahiro and his team wrote a book, An App Changed Shion's Life, about how the process helped one of his students.
